Winning Words

“I have a hard time saying no. Especially when an organization’s mission is dear to my heart — like that of Pikes Peak Writers. I’ve taken on many different roles with the organization over the years, though my favorite was probably as a two-time conference director. Watching all of the pieces of a weekend-long conference come together, and then hearing from participants and speakers alike how it’s been so beneficial to their “writerly life,” was a true joy.

I believe saying no when you’re overloaded is important, but it’s just as important to seek out one or two nonprofit organizations and give (if only a little) of your time. Much of our lives as writers are spent in solitude, as they should be, putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard). Through PPW, you can meet others with similar goals, all the while helping support the local writing community.”

–Kirsten Akens, PPWC Volunteer of the Year 2006
